Islamic Fashion Market
New Opportunity for Thai Garment and Textile Industry
The modern fashion scene remains vibrant with continuous breakthroughs in design and production technology. Various brands are making their products available in more sizes which can be shopped from both online channels and at their brick-and-mortar stores to provide customers with plenty of options. With the increasing number of Muslim population around the world, it is no wonder that the market for Islamic fashion has attracted attention of various apparel brands, and this could be a great opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs in the garment and textile industry to flourish as well.
Currently, it is estimated that the number of Muslim populations in Southeast Asia is around 400 million people. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, the number of Muslim populations globally will increase by 73 percent between 2010 and 2050. Interestingly, the average age of these populations is around 30 years old, which is the working age with purchasing power. Another report from Dinar Standard, a leading global consulting and research company, has predicted that by 2024, the value of spending from this demography could reach as high as 2.4 trillion US dollars. The countries that import the most Islamic fashion products in the world include the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Russia. At the moment, only a handful of countries such as China, Turkey and India manufacture products that serve these customers. Thus, these could become the markets for high quality garment and textile products from Thailand.
In recent years, many world-class apparel brands have enjoyed a heathy share in the market for Muslim consumers as a result of clever approaches. For example, Uniqlo has collaborated with a British designer Hana Tajima to release exclusive apparels for Muslim women. Another example is Dolce and Gabbana which launched their lineup of outfit for Muslim women in 2016. In yet another example, H&M has increased their design and production of Islamic garments. As for distribution channels, it was reported that Muslim customers shop for their clothes online up to 4.8 billion US dollars. This figure underlines the huge potential of this market segment, and some of the highlighted products include the headscarf for Muslim women or the hijab which require comfortable fabrics that are breathable and easy to wash. Other products would include woven fabrics and patterned fabrics that can be designed to suit the requirements of these customers.
At any rate, entrepreneurs who are interested in the market for Islamic fashion need to do thorough research in order to create products that are in total compliance with Sharia (Islamic law). For example, Muslim women cannot dress in tight-fitting or revealing outfit. Also, their clothes are not allowed to feature any patterns of large animals. Preferred colors are of darker shades such as gray, brown or black which are considered auspicious colors. The design and production technology of these products are also important because they need to be comfortable, enhance wearers’ confidence, provide an array of options as well as offering added values.
